Chapter Eight

Lucie watched the Italian countryside as they drove toward Pompeii. Everything was lush and green, the fields, flowers, and trees far ahead of where they’d been in their rebirth cycle in Philly. At first, Trent was full of little tidbits of information, but the farther south they drove, the less talkative he became. It might be that he felt the need to focus on his driving, but as they neared Pompeii, her nervousness grew, and as it did, so did her dislike of the silence. If they continued this way much longer, she would start biting her nails, something she’d stopped doing years ago. While she didn’t want to appear nosy, the more she could learn about the formidable Dr. Tedesco, the better.

“Dr. Willis, I understand you and Dr. Tedesco have been operating excavations in Pompeii for years. How does that work?”

He glanced over at her. “Call me Trent. Dr. Willis is my father, and he’s an orthopedic surgeon, one of the best in Sydney. As for our work in Pompeii, you might say Mario is the front man. His name and reputation initially opened the doors so to speak, but for the last five years, we’ve functioned as equals. Ten years ago, there was an accident, and Dr. Amati was badly injured. He was unable to continue and had to leave the excavation. Mario took over as team leader, and I joined the crew. Now, we share the responsibilities for the digs and the students evenly, although he does handle the senior grad students while I like to whip the new ones into shape. He can be a bit of a hard arse about some things. I spare the newcomers a tongue lashing by making sure they know how he likes things done—not that there will be any issues with you.”

She angled herself to look at him and raised an eyebrow. “I see, but if you see me doing something I shouldn’t, feel free to let me know. I don’t want to be any more disruptive than I am already. Is Elena’s Clive, one of yours or one of his?”

“His. Clive will be leaving us in a couple of months. Actually, we were hoping to persuade him to stay on, but he’s been accepted to be a part of Wallquest, a community archeology project near Hadrian’s Wall, in Newcastle. He’s looking forward to it.”

“I can see working in Britain would have its appeal. I’ve done some digging back home ... a few early colonial and Native American sites as well as Mayan, Aztec, and Incan ones in Mexico, Central America, and Peru, but I’ll never find anything Roman in the US. The Spanish Empire might’ve stretched that far, but the Romans didn’t quite make it.” She chuckled. “With that in mind, I’ve chosen to content myself with working in the museum and teaching. When I get back home, I’ll get to add the destruction of Pompeii to our Mediterranean Gallery. I’m very excited about choosing the artifacts we’ll display.
